Volvo Ocean Race - Abu Dhabi OR disappointed but happy after Leg 7

Leg 7 arrivals in Lisbon - Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing - Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 Ian Roman / Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing
Ian Walker disappointed with leg 7 result, but happy with team resilience.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing had to settle for fifth place on the seventh Leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Newport, USA to Lisbon yesterday after its comeback bid faltered in light winds off the Portuguese coast.

The result meant Abu Dhabi finished off the podium for the first time in this edition of the gruelling round the world race, but retains top spot overall courtesy of a five-point lead to the Chinese Team Dongfeng.

And after docking in the Portuguese capital, skipper Ian Walker said even though he was not happy with the result, he was still impressed by the performance of his team.

The ‘highs’ and lows of leg seven frustrate navigator Simon Fisher

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing could only manage fifth place in the latest stage of the gruelling round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, but with the Chinese from Dongfeng Race Team only managing fourth, Abu Dhabi still lead the overall race by 5 points, with two short European legs left to sail.

Navigator Simon Fisher was philosophical after the 2,800-nautical mile Leg across the Atlantic.
