Volvo Cars Volunteer of the Month announced

by Sail Canada on 6 Jun 2015
Volvo Cars Volunteer of the Month Sail Canada / Voile Canada http://www.sailing.ca/
Sail Canada is pleased to announce the Volvo Cars Volunteer of the Month for May! Tom Saunders of West Hawk Lake Yacht Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Tom helped resurrect the sailing program at West Hawk Lake Yacht Club in 2006 when there had been no program for over 15 years. In the nine years since, the small club has gone from 12 kids participating every summer to over 50! Tom does everything for the programming at WHLYC - from fixing boats to running races.

He helps with instructing CANSail classes, and helps as mark set and safety officer for regattas. Tom works hard to locate good used sail boats from across the country and trailers them to West Hawk for use by its members and CANSail program participants! He does this while maintaining his principal residence in Ottawa and summering at West Hawk Lake, MB.

Volunteer positions held at WHLYC:

• Commodore
• Race Committee
• Mark Set
• Sailing School Instructor

West Hawk Lake Yacht Club is a Member club with Sail Manitoba and Sail Canada, and a registered CANSail Training Site.

WHLYC is renowned for delivering CANSail Dinghy and CANSail Windsurf programs, and organizing regattas such as annual Dinghy Classes and provincial championships. This year West Hawk Lake Yacht Club will host Manitoba's Provincial Optimist Dinghy Championships and in 2016 they will deliver the Optimist dinghy and Windsurf events of the Manitoba Games.
