Vendee Globe - Davies Video, Golding's new mast, Thomson sets out

The Vendee Globe, a single handed round the world non-stop race, begins on 10th November 2012.

As Sam Davies (Savéol) was out at sea for her Vendée Globe qualifying course, the British yachtswoman had to stop in Coruna.

The 48-hour pit stop was meant to repair Savéol's starboard rudder blade that had been blocked since the yacht hit an unidentified floating object and a rogue wave.

Davies will now sail north to Port-la-Forêt.

Gamesa skipper Mike Golding can get back out sailing again.

After a dismasting in May while sailing off the Isle of Wight, Golding's monohull had been repaired in Southampton. The mast was eventually restepped on Thursday and Gamesa should be sailing again shortly.

On Saturday 30 June, the British skipper will compete in the 2012 J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race, a one-day yacht race attracting about 1,700 boats, where Gamesa will be the only IMOCA 60 racing.

'It is perfect training in this Vendée Globe year. The tight course means I will have to go through a lot of manoeuvres during the 50 nautical mile course and will be a great opportunity to really stretch Gamesa’s legs competitively on home waters' Golding explained.

Alex Thomson left the Straits of Gibraltar on Tuesday night (19th June) to sail non-stop to New York.

The British skipper is going for a single-handed Atlantic Ocean crossing on his monohull Hugo Boss, which underwent maintenance work in Barcelona.

On his way back across the Atlantic, Alex Thomson will attempt to beat the solo record between the Ambrose lighthouse and Cape Lizard.
