Toronto Area Hospice Regatta ends on high note

by Greg Nicoll on 18 Jun 2012
Skipper Rhonda Joyce and crewmates battling it out in the very tight Melges 20 class - 2012 Toronto Hospice Regatta Greg Nicoll
Two days of great one design racing at the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta ended with $15,000 being presented to Perram House of Toronto, a palliative care residence that provides end of life care to individuals that have a limited life expectancy.

Regatta chair Richard Reid, a passionate supporter of Perram House thanked and praised all of the volunteers that organized and ran this top notch regatta. The funds from this regatta are part of the 1.2 million dollars raised this year by 25 Hospice Regattas in Canada, the United States and the Virgin Islands.

All aspects of the regatta were superbly run. On the course, Principle Race Officer John Weakley again showed strong leadership in keeping the courses fair and the race management first class. The National Yacht Club again demonstrated why it is renowned for running great regattas. The regatta social committee gave the racers a fun filled Saturday night with the kilt and hula hoop contests and then capped off the evenings entertainment with the energy packed band Fiddle Stix.

On the two race courses, named after their title sponsors; Procam and The Shotgun Fund, Argosy Partners Ltd, eight fleets; Melges 2, Melges 20, J22, 2.4 metre, C&C 99, Beneteau 36.7, 8 Metres and Beneteau First 10R, battled it our two days of light to moderate breeze squeezing in 7 races. On the Shotgun Course the Beneteau 36.7 Canadian Championship was captured by First Today skippered by Gary Tisdale last year’s winner of the 36.7 North American Championship. The Procam course also hosted the J22 Ontario Championships that was won by Stampede, Skippered by Jeffery Love of the host National Yacht Club.

The overall winner of the Toronto Area Hospice Regatta Perpetual Trophy was Bear Necessity, a C&C 99 skippered by Dexter Halsall from the Port Credit Yacht Club. Bear Necessity receives an invitation from the National Hospice Regatta Alliance to compete in the National Hospice Championship Regatta in St. Petersburg Florida next March.
