Wednesday, 9 April, marked the start of Royal Greenwich's 150 day countdown to this year’s Tall Ships Regatta. The Dutch sailing schooner Tolkien carried guests from Woolwich Pier to Greenwich Pier and back. The sun shone, a gentle breeze blew and musicians sang and played sea shanties to set the mood.

The Tall Ships Regatta will start from Falmouth in Cornwall on Sunday 31 August. 40-50 sailing ships will race to a finishing line off the Isle of Wight. From there the ships will sail on to the Thames Estuary, and complete their voyages on Thursday 4 September and Friday 5 September at Woolwich in south east London.

The ships will moor at four locations between Woolwich and Greenwich town centres, with the smaller ships in West India Dock at Canary Wharf. Members of the public are invited on board to experience some of the finest sailing ships in the world. The largest ships are up to 110 metres in length. The Tolkien's hull measures 36m, only about one-third of the biggest ones.

There will be a range of entertainment and celebrations over the weekend of September 5-6 along the Thames down river from Canary Wharf, including a Crew Parade through Greenwich Town with marching bands, strolling entertainers, pop-up performance areas and firework displays in Greenwich and Woolwich.
