Old Pulteney, US Sailing host third Annual Maritime Heroes Award

by US Sailing on 16 Oct 2014
SW
Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky is partnering with the US Sailing Association for the third year to grant The Maritime Heroes Award, which expresses appreciation to the men and women in sailing communities around the country for their humanitarian achievements. The award recognizes those who are making significant contributions to volunteer, educate, advocate or simply encourage participation in sailing within their hometowns—and beyond. Make your nomination today!

'The spirit of the sea is deeply engrained in the heritage of Old Pulteney. That is why we strongly support and celebrate those who contribute to the maritime community,' says Pat Graney, President of International Beverage USA. 'We are excited to continue to serve as the official scotch of US Sailing and to honor those that truly give back and make a difference.'

Known as the ‘Maritime Malt,’ Old Pulteney, created in 1826, is crafted at the Pulteney Distillery in Wick, Scotland, which is one of the most northerly distilleries on the Scottish mainland. Pulteney matures its whisky in hand-selected oak casks, slowly capturing the unique character of its stunning landscape with its long seafaring history. Many say they can taste a faint hint of the sea in Old Pulteney malts thanks to the distillery’s windswept location and close proximity to the North Sea.

'The Maritime Heroes Award offers us all a special opportunity to learn and share the amazing stories of so many sailors who are making impactful community connections while promoting goodwill through sailing,' said Amy Larkin, US Sailing Marketing Director. 'The individuals considered for this distinction are true leaders in their communities. US Sailing is excited to partner with Old Pulteney to celebrate these accomplishments and provide more awareness for these great programs.'

Last year’s winner was Rorke Miller of Traverse City, Michigan. Miller was nominated by a member of his sailing community for his involvement in the SAIL Champion program, which aims to help at-risk youth through the therapeutic activity of sailing. As director of the program, he helped to create a positive environment where young adults could seek guidance and training for a better future.

Nominations for The Maritime Heroes Award are being accepted from October 13, 2014 through October 31, 2014 at Maritime Heroes website. Finalists will be selected by Old Pulteney and US Sailing Association representatives and honored at a gala event in January 2015 at the US Sailing Association’s National Sailing Programs Symposium in New Orleans, LA.

Old Pulteney’s expressions have been the recipients of numerous accolades including Whisky Bible’s 2012 World Whisky of the Year Award, San Francisco World Spirits Competition’s Gold and Double Gold Medals, Beverage Testing Institute’s Gold Medals and many others.
