Nathan Outteridge - 2009 CST Composites International Moth Class World Championships Sean Trew (Pacific Fog)
http://www.pacificfog.net/
Dual World 49er Champion Nathan Outteridge (AUS) won the 2009 Australian Moth titles last January, it was his first ever Moth regatta. Now the scene shifts to the 2009 North American titles, the Pre-Worlds.
With all eight races being won by the Aussie contenders, it was once again Outteridge who walked away with the series.
Heat five started today in about 15 knots with Rohan Veal rounding the top mark in the lead followed by Chris Graham then Scott Babbage. Rohan capsized in a gybe, and Scott passed Chris downwind after ‘heckling him about the pressure of being infront’, and Scott then held on to win.
Race six started in puffy breeze around 18 knots. This race was a ‘z’ course, which seemed to baffle the fleet somewhat. Scott Babbage rounded the first mark, followed by Rohan Veal, Nathan Outteridge, Bora Gulari (USA) and Arnaud Psarofaghis.(SUI) It was Nathan Outteridge who worked out the z’ course and pulled away to win the race.
The final heat of the day the wind was gusting up to 25 knots and pushing hard to the left, making the port end of the line biased for the first time of the series. Rohan flew across the top of Nathan at the pin, but then ‘zippered his boat open’ and had to pull out.
Nathan tacked out early to lead the bunch heading right, and Brad Funk (USA)and Scott Babbage headed off towards the shore on a big knock.
Scott Babbage ducked Nathan up the course, before getting him on the layline when he double tacked and got stuck in irons. Around the next lap and a bit Scott Babbage hung on to the lead and finished for another win, ahead of a close finish between Nathan and the fast finishing Bora.
So with all eight races being won by the Aussie contenders, Nathan Outteridge walked away with the series win. Another to add to his long list.
'I was very happy with my result in the Nationals. To be able to win my second National Championship in the Moth class is great, especially in such a competive fleet. I had really good speed both up and downwind' said Nathan.
'This result was due to a lot of hard work from myself training back home working on my techniques and also Rohan Veal who has done hours and hours of work with me to develop the fastest equipment possible. We have been able to come up with a really good package which puts us in a good place just days out for the worlds'
'I still believe there is room for improvement in my sailing as I have been victim to a number of capsizes in the races. So tomorrow I am going to work on my handling while competing in the Dash for Cash.'
