La saison de voile de haute performance bat son plein alors que la compétition se corse sous le soleil de la Floride. Le club de voile Coconut Grove a présenté la régate d’hiver 2015 de Miami et Nord Américains et accueilli les navigateurs de 470, de 49ers, FX, Nacra et RSX.

La plupart des navigateurs participent à cet événement en préparation pour l’épreuve de la Coupe de monde de la semaine prochaine, mais les Canadiens sont présents dans l’espoir de se qualifier pour les Jeux panaméricains. La triple athlète olympique Nikola Girke a remonté sur sa planche RSX après une absence de deux ans et a terminé au 8e rang, obtenant ainsi une place pour les Jeux panaméricains. Nikola a pris sa retraite du RSX après avoir terminé au 10e rang aux Jeux olympiques de 2012 à Londres. Nikola s’est associée au navigateur de 470 Luke Ramsay après les Jeux olympiques afin de tenter d’obtenir une place pour les Jeux de Rio dans la nouvelle catégorie olympique Nacra 17.

Zac Plavsic, qui effectuait un retour à la suite d’une série de blessures subies la saison dernière, a présenté une solide performance dans la division masculine en terminant 9e, obtenant du même fait une place aux Jeux panaméricains de 2015. Zac a terminé 8e au classement général de la catégorie RSX aux Jeux olympiques de 2012 à Londres.

Un peu plus loin, sur la rue, l’équipe paralympique de SKUD participait à la régate paralympique contre des rivaux internationaux. L’équipe canadienne de SKUD formée de John McRoberts et Jackie Gay continue leur reste une course à disputer aujourd’hui.

À Fort Lauderdale, la régate des catégories olympiques de Lauderdale a accueilli les navigateurs de Finn, Laser et Radial. Al Clark, Kyle Martin, Matt Ryder et Max Gallant, ainsi que Luke Ruteinburg, font partie du contingent canadien. La plupart des navigateurs retourneront à Miami afin de se préparer pour l’épreuve de la Coupe du monde de Miami, qui débutera lundi prochain, le 26 janvier.
