Lake Ontario 300 Challenge Update

by Brian Townsend on 17 Mar 2011
The Lake Ontario 300 attracts sailors from many ports around the Great Lakes. SAIL-WORLD.com/Jeff Chalmers (Port Credit, Ont) Jeff Chalmers

Sail-World Canada and Canadian Yachting are proud to be the Official Media Sponsors of the 2011 Lake Ontario 300 Challenge. This year, you will be able to follow the before, during and after events of the Lake Ontario 300 Challenge at Sail-World.com/Canada and www.canadianyachting.ca as they happen. All participants will have instant access to upload photos and stories while racing and share them with friends, family and more than 25,000 subscribers across Canada.

Registration Update
Registration for this year’s race is going strong with 74 yachts registered to date. The registration by division shows an excellent spread of yachts in all divisions, with a very healthy mix of repeating yachts and first time competitors.

Of note are the past three Sperry Cup winners who are returning to compete or defend the cup title:

Afterburn, last year’s Sperry Cup winner is returning to defend the cup and hopefully be the first repeat winner of the Sperry Cup. Afterburn’s remarkable story on last year’s amazing challenge is located in this year’s Lake Ontario Offshore Racing Guide.

MacIntosh, Durk Steigenga will once again be competing in this year’s Lake Ontario 300 in an attempt to regain the Sperry Cup he won 2 years ago, except this year will represent the first time Dick will compete against his brother John Steigenga in a major offshore race.

MacIntosh has been raced successfully in a variety of ocean and fresh water offshore races with the Steigenga brothers onboard as a double-handed team. John is also an accomplished double-handed racer based out of Huntington Woods Michigan with his Beneteau First 40.7, which the brothers have used to win their division in the Chicago to Mackinac race. This year, John Steigenga has decided to make the journey to Port Credit and challenge to win this year’s Sperry Cup or at least take away the chance from his brother.

Demons Dance has not won the Sperry Cup, but the father and son team of Ric and Mark Doedens won the first Sperry Cup as a double-handed team on Gizmo. This year they are returning on Dad’s C&C99 to work their magic once again.
