Canada increases boating safety dollars

by Transport Canada/Sail-World on 15 Jul 2012
Canada to increase funding for boating safety SW
Canada's Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced additional funding for the Boating Safety Class Contribution Program.

The renewed program, now called the Boating Safety Contribution Program (BSCP), will continue to provide financial contributions to organizations that promote boating safety in Canada and will increase in 2014 to support more initiatives across the country.

'We are increasing our commitment to boating safety,' said Minister Lebel. 'Each year, boating accidents cause deaths and injuries and our government is working to prevent these unnecessary tragedies.'

In addition, Minister Lebel announced the call for proposals under the BSCP for education and awareness projects that promote safe boating practices during the 2013 boating season. Applications for next year’s projects will be accepted until November 1, 2012.

'By increasing funding for not-for-profit and public safety organizations, local governments and other institutions, we are enabling those best positioned in our communities to deliver effective programs that help make Canadian waters safer,' added Minister Lebel.

The Government of Canada will provide up to $500,000 in contribution funding for projects that will take place in fiscal year 2013-2014 and up to $975,000 annually starting in fiscal year 2014-2015.

The Boating Safety Contribution Program aims to:

1. Reduce loss of life, injuries and property damage due to boating accidents;
2. Increase the number of pleasure craft operators who follow safe boating practices; and
3. Improve the availability of national boating incident data to enhance evidence-based awareness and education initiatives.
