At the recent Marina Industry Association Awards Night, the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, based in Newport, was announced as the runner up to Sandringham Yacht Club in the Club Marina of the Year Award.

The judges advised that it was a very hotly contested award and that it was a very close call among all finalists and so close that RPAYC was given a Highly Commended Award.

There were five finalists, these being:

• The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club
• Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay
• Sandringham Yacht Club
• Southport Yacht Club
• Royal Perth Yacht Club

The Award doesn’t solely judge the marina, but the entire club including training activities, community involvement, facilities, food and beverage and service provided.

General Manager Suzanne Davies said, 'Given this was the first time we have entered the Awards, we are delighted with this result. This is great recognition for our Waterfront team but the all encompassing nature of the Award reflects the efforts of all staff and volunteers.'

At the same event, the RPAYC was also awarded with a 4 ½ Gold Anchor Rating. This rating is similar to the hotel style rating and in order to achieve specified levels various facilities need to be provided along with minimum service levels. The facilities are judged through an on site audit process and the service through customer feedback and mystery shopping.

'Our aim was to achieve 4 ½ Anchors. Five Anchors requires ensuite bathrooms on the marina and being able to dispense fuel so this was out of our reach.

This is in addition to our Level 3 Clean Marina certification which the club received in March 2011,' commented Davies.

When whales meet sails
CAMPER helmsman Roberto ‘Chuny’ Bermudez found himself nearly face to face with whale in middle of North Atlantic Ocean. Currently the database for marine mammal strikes is very sparse. We are requesting sailors and boaters help to submit information on current and past incidents, however long ago that may be. By giving a location, date, identification if possible, and any other relevant information you can help scientists better understand where marine mammals are at risk for strikes
