Latest newsletter from Peter Burling and Blair Tuke's Olympic 49er campaign:
Blair Tuke heads for the bank after the finish of the OKI 24 Hour Race, Lake Pupuke
Hope you have had a relaxing Easter. We’re currently training in Tauranga, enjoying some home cooking and a beautiful warm spell of weather … but not much wind.
We have both done heaps of sailing since our last newsletter in January including 5 to 6 sessions a week in the 49er. Our NZL 49er 'squad' now has 3 boats - it is fantastic having other 49er’s to train/practice with. It is really great having Nathan Handley as our coach. He will also be travelling to Europe with us
Since our last newsletter … we both helmed for NZ in different teams in the ISAF Teams Racing Worlds in Perth in February. Peter was in the NZL1 team which were 3rd overall in the open event and Blair’s NZL3 team were 2nd in the under-21 competition. The different dynamic in teams racing (with 3 boats in each team) is a lot of fun and this was a great experience.
We also competed in the BMW regatta, in a Melges 24 (Thanks to Steve from NZsail.com). It was a fun boat to sail and we took line honours in our division.
Peter has just returned from Brazil where he was part of the four man NZL team representing Oceania in the Nations Cup Grand Final (matchracing in J24 keelboats) where the racing was very close. The cultural experiences were also amazing.
While Peter was in Brazil, Blair was in the 2-man MUSTO team which won the prestigious Oki 24 hour race, sailed on Lake Pupuke in lasers – not sure how the laser boys felt being beaten by a couple of 2-handed sailors. Sailing in these non-49er events is keeping our racing skills honed (as well as being a lot of fun).
Next week we are extremely lucky to have Australia’s 49er World champion coming over to NZ for 4 days sailing with us – we are really looking forward to this. There have been a few logistical problems with this, one of which has ended up with us purchasing another older 49er so our Aussie friends have a boat to sail in.
Our new 49er is looking good to be ready in early May, in time to ship to Europe for our first regatta -Kiel week (Germany) in June – then onto the Worlds in Italy.
