In a brazen theft that rocked the Australian marine industry, two brand new Sailfish aluminium catamarans were stolen from the Sydney Boat Show at Darling Harbour. However, some weeks following the theft one boat has been recovered and Police are hopeful that the second boat will surface soon.
The timely recovery of the Sailfish Reeffish’r with a single 90hp Honda outboard on the transom has been heralded by Webbe Marine principals Gavan Daly and Ashley Faraj as an 'absolute credit to everyone involved.'
'We are exceptionally grateful to so many people who assisted with the recovery of the boat' Gavan Daly said.
'From our insurers who immediately offered a reward, to the Daily Telegraph, Honda Marine, NSW Police and the boating and fishing community of NSW, we owe a debt of gratitude. Everyone played their part with the result that the Reeffish’r was recovered in time for us to display it at the Brisbane Boat Show.'
Still missing is the Sailfish Reef Runner with dual Honda 60hp outboards fitted to the transom.
'Regrettably this is a first for the industry and we hope that in future, the security will be strengthened to prevent a similar occurrence,' Gavan Daly said.
'What impressed Ashley and I is how quickly the community swung into action to bring about the recovery of the Sailfish Reeffish’r. Daily Telegraph journalist Mal Holland had an article in the paper the following day and Nautilus Marine insurance posted a reward within hours of being notified of the theft.
'Thereafter, Honda, the NSW Police and the fishing community got right behind us. Police soon received vital information which led to the recovery of the Reeffish’r and the arrest of an individual.
'To all these people who have been simply magnificent, we just want to say a simple thank you.'
