Sailors Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page came out of the 2012 Rolex Miami OCR victorious and now they share with us the experience and excitement of their win which marked a first in the regattas history.
Finally managed to win the Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta. After two silver medals in our last two attempts, it was a nice feeling for Malcolm and I to come away with the Gold. It is the first time in the regattas history, 22 years, that an Australian has won this in an Olympic class.
We experienced predominately light conditions throughout the regatta but it was a great opportunity to practice our racing since the Worlds. Our weeks performances were consistent with a close fought battle with the team from Netherlands, the Coster brothers (Fourth in Beijing). We held a 10 point lead coming into the medal race but not leaving anything to chance to decided to stay close to our rivals. Towards the end of the race it was clear that we would come away with Gold but our close cover was forcing the Dutch boat into third position overall.
At the end of the medal race we decided to stop before the finish and let the Dutch boat past for them to secure second position overall, a position they had held throughout the week.
With the container packed and Malcolm and Victor almost home, my wife and I decided to stay in South Beach for a few days. I will head back to Sydney, Rike to Hamburg to start all our preparations for the European season starting in late March.
Thank you for your support and look forward to catching up once we return.
