Australian crews receive funding after success at World Championships

Yachting Australia is pleased to announce the recipients of funding for competitors who had strong performances at recent ISAF International and Recognised Class World Championships.

For the 2010-2011 period 16 successful applicants who competed at nine separate regattas shared funding from Yachting Australia following their results at World Championship regattas across the globe. The International and Recognised Class funding program is made possible by support allocated to Yachting Australia by the Australian Sports Commission.

Recipients included Queensland teenager Angus Macgregor who won the Access 2.3 World Championship in Great Britain Macgregor is also the current Australian Sailor of the Year with a Disability.

Guy Bancroft and Dave Grace received funding after winning the B14 World Championship in France while Scott Cunningham and Jason Walker finished second.

New South Wales pair Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin were rewarded following their World Championship victory in the Hobie 16 class in China, with fellow Australians James Wierzbowski and Pip Pietromonaco, and Gavin Colby and Sasha Marks also receiving funding.

505 sailors Sandy Higgins and Paul Marsh were third at their World Championships on Hamilton Island while in the International Mirror class father and son team Lachlan and Finn Gilbert were fifth.

Steven Brewin and Jack Benson received funding assistance after finishing second and third respectively at the A Class World Championship in Italy while fellow catamaran sailors Brett Burvill and Ryan Duffield were fourth at the Tornado World Championship.

Australian sailors in the Fireball class also received funding with Ben Schulz and Phillip Bowley, and Robin Inns and Joel Coultas finishing fifth and seventh at their World Championships.

Applications for funding for the 2011-2012 period are currently being accepted with forms available on the Yachting Australia website, www.yachting.org.au.
