Corsair Seawind Australian Multihull Championships, hosted by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron for Multihull Yacht Club Queensland, is being held from 19 to 23 September 2011.
Specialist multihull racing skipper George Owen cleverly mastered an unstable soft southerly wind to steer the Victorian catamaran Mad Max to a runaway line honours win on Moreton Bay today.
Mad Max racing for honours over the unfamiliar Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron course was unmatched for boat speed in a breeze which rarely gusted above five knots to set up an impressive ultra light wind performance.
However while Mad Max designed by Tony Grainger led the 24 yacht fleet from the start to finish avoiding the time consuming penalty of becoming ‘parked’ and motionless in the calmer patches failed with the challenge to outpace her high 1.138 time correction factor.
As expected the line honours result favoured the lighter and larger sail powered Mad Max which recorded a 28 minute 28 second victory over the Port Douglas Yacht Club entry Malice skippered by Mal Richardson while Zebb Peters steered Turning Point into third another four minutes 50 seconds astern

But the more important handicap honours resulted in an equally impressive win for the Keith Glover skippered Trilogy.
Skipper Keith Glover justified the expense of fitting a canting mast and a new suit of sails when Trilogy sailed well above her .939 correction factor to record a 24 minute 56 second win over South Australia’s Wilparina 11 (Robert Remilton) and Sunshine Coast skipper Julian Griffiths in Hot Vindaloo.
The racing for the Division 2 championship points was much closer with Victorian Shaun Fishley steering Frassid to an eight minutes 24 second win over Queensland’s Peter Hackett in Intrigued and Linda Renouf’s Dash.
Brisbane’s Phil Day winner of the 2011 Brisbane to Gladstone Race again expressed his understanding to steer his Mark Pescott designed Whitehaven catamaran Rhythmic with the required pace to outsail her low .748 time correction factor to ultimately record a comfortable 20 minute 16 second victory to lead the Division 3 National championship.
While Glen Stewart steered the veteran trimaran Cliffhanger into second with Victoria’s George Bulka claiming third with his self designed catamaran Skedaddle.
