ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca - Australia 1,2,3 in Laser Medal Race
Sat, 5 Apr 2014

ISAF Sailing World Cup - Mallorca - Tom Burton blasted to World Cup victory winning the medal race from Ash Brunning (who finished eighth overall) and Matt Wearn( who finished sixth overall.)

Burton took World Cup Gold from Jean-Baptiste Bernaz (FRA) and Tonci Stipanovic (CRO). Andy Maloney (NZL) finished fifth overall and Sam Meech (NZL) 10th.

A very strong performance from Burton who had finished fourth in Miami behind Stipanovic, Robert Scheidt (BRA) who finished ninth here and Nick Thompson (GBR) who finished 12th here.

Today Burton said ‘ I came here to win. Two years ago I came third and last year I came second and I wanted to keep stepping it up. I was really disappointed to not win here last year with the points I had and I’m really stoked to win it.

'It’s been a tough week and I haven’t been as consistent as I would have liked to have been but I had a good first day of finals to put me back in the game. All the points were pretty close. I wanted to have a good start. I had a really good first beat and all the guys were around me but it was a really close bunch in the end.çç

'Earlier in the week I said the Aussies would be there or thereabouts, but to have 1, 2, 3 in the medal race was awesome. To win against this field was very satisfying.’

Sail-World spoke to Australia's Laser coach Michael Blackburn about his squad. ‘A great result for Tom, Matt Wearn and Ash Brunning.

‘Tom’s last Worlds in Oman were below his expectations and we have been working on fine detail over the Southern hemisphere summer and it’s paying off and I think we will see a lot better performance at the next Worlds.

‘Our target this year is the Worlds in Santander so we are looking at getting more race experience and putting some good things into the practice at these couple of World Cups and the Europeans in the lead up to that and also we will be taking a couple of guys to Rio to get more familiar with that which is pretty important part of this year as well.
‘Our results show the depth in the Australian Squad is really good and there is even younger guys beyond the seven we had here this week who are looking to take their places in coming years.

‘Tom Slingsby had an Olympics experience before he won the Laser Gold in London. These guys haven’t really had that. They associated with Tom and they have seen it all happen a bit but to be up in contention now and have it open in front of them is exciting for them and the pressure will be on in the coming years.’
