2013 Laser European Championship - Australians make a strong start
Mon, 2 Sep 2013

The 2013 Laser European Championship and Laser Radial Men’s World Championship, Australian sailors have made a strong start in blustery conditions in Dublin, Ireland. All four Australians in the Laser European Championships are currently in the top 20 in the 123 boat fleet.

Two races were completed in all fleets on Sunday in breeze between 12 and 25 knots with Ashley Brunning ending the day as the top placed Australian, third in the Laser European Championship.

'I’m happy with my results from today with a fourth and a first,' said Brunning. 'It’s a solid start to the event but it’s a long regatta with 10 races to go. In such a long series consistency will pay.

'Racing so close to land up in the corner of Dublin Bay has made it very hard to observe shirts as they come quite suddenly, especially on the outer course,' he said. 'There were plenty of big gains and losses to be made. You just need to be patient and stick to the high angles and not get caught in the middle!'

Ryan Palk is currently in 15th position following a sixth and a fifth on the first day of racing.

'It was certainly a windy one today,' said Palk. 'It was good to get back into racing as it’s been a while since the last event. We had some great tight racing in my fleet today and I started with two keepers, a sixth and a fifth. There’s plenty of racing left and I’m really looking forward to it.'

Matthew Wearn is in 17th position after a ninth and a fourth, with Jared West one place behind in 18th following a sixth and a seventh.

'It was a tough day as always, with stronger shifty winds meaning we spent a lot of time going straight into the waves upwind,' said West. 'I managed to sail OK and look forward to moving up the rankings tomorrow.'

In the Laser Radial Men’s World Championship which is taking place in Dublin at the same time Australia’s defending champion Tristan Brown ended the first day of racing in second position.

\rown had a first and a second to be tied on points with the regatta leader. Bradley Utting is 28th overall following a sixth and a 23rd, with Nicholas Howe 70th.

Racing continues in Dublin on Monday with results available here.
