Australian Youth Championship - Challenging Day 2 + Video

2013 OAMPS Insurance Brokers Australian Youth Championship second day and gusty conditions have challenged crews in Hobart, Tasmania.
After the opening day was cut short due to strong winds racing got underway on the River Derwent just after 10am on Tuesday with 160 crews in action across five classes.
The 420 and 29ers fleets were the first away, with gusts above 25 knots making the going tough and a number of crews found themselves upside down and in the water during the first race.
West Australians William Boulden and Nicholas Gale crossed the line first in the 420 fleet, ahead of defending Australian champions Carrie Smith and Ella Clark, with Dante Olivieri and Alex Marzano third.
Queenslanders Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake got the win in the opening 29er race, ahead of Henry and Grant Makin. New South Welshmen Harry Price and Angus Williams were third.
At the completion of the first race the race committee sent the two fleets ashore as the strong gusts made racing incredibly difficult. A number of hours the 420s and 29ers returned to the water, beginning their second race of the day just after 5pm.
Lachlan Gilmour and Thomas Blaauw won the 420 race, again with strong gusts causing difficulty for many crews, with William Boulden and Nicholas Gale second, Xavier Winston-Smith and Joshua Dawson were third.
The result has given Boulden and Gale the overall lead, three points clear of Winston-Smith and Dawson, with Carrie Smith and Ella Clark now third, two points further behind.
Charlie Wyatt and Lewis Brake won the final 29er race of the day, ahead of reigning Australian champions Tom Siganto and Joel Turner with Harry Price and Angus Williams third.
After the opening three races Price and Williams hold down a one point lead over Wyatt and Brake, who are tied on points with Siganto and Turner.
Over on the Laser course a large wind shift forced the abandonment of the first Radial and 4.7 races on Tuesday with both classes eventually able to complete two races.
Defending Australian champion Mark Spearman had a great day in the Radial fleet, winning both races to take the overall lead. Overnight leader Christopher Anderson is now second overall, a point behind Spearman, following a third and a fourth.
William Bates is in third position, three points behind Anderson following the opening four races.
'It was a pretty challenging day,' said Spearman. 'I had two wins but it was very close, both times I had to protect the lead for the whole race, even on the last reach to the finish.
'The wind was very up and down and shifty,' he said. 'It was like that for all of the nationals and then again this week, when it comes over the mountain it’s tough.'
Louise Evans continues to lead the girl’s class, in sixth overall, following a fourth and a 17th. Victorian Anna Philip is the second female Radial sailor, in 14th.
It’s tight at the top of the Laser 4.7 fleet, with Conor Nicholas and Richard Maher tied on points, with Nicholas first overall on a count back after a second and a seventh.
Japanese sailor Daichi Takayama is third overall, with Anna Vaughn the leading female in ninth.
Jock Calvert continues to lead the Bic Techno 293 fleet, with the Tasmanian sailor tied on points with Antoine King but first overall on a count back. Calvert finished with a third and a first while for King it was a first and a second, allowing him to close the gap.
Hugh Jones is third overall, with Annalise Gilbert the leading female in fourth.
Racing continues on the River Derwent on Wednesday, before the event wraps up on Thursday.
