Ukrainian upset but still the winners in Cadet Worlds
Sat, 5 Jan 2013

Two young crews from the Ukraine today finished first and second overall in the International Cadet World Championship on Hobart’s River Derwent, but in a different order from to that going into the last day of racing.

The Cadets, along with other dinghy classes running their championships on the river, started early, knowing that conditions would be unsailable later in the day.

Fortunately, the managed to complete all races before the forecast gale force northeries swept down the river, bringing heatwave conditions to Tasmania’s capital city. In fact, the winds against reached 38 knots, the temperature a record 41.3 degrees Celius.

Race 11 saw a late but valiant effort by the Australians crews, although it seemed unlikely the Ukrainians could not lose first or second oval.

As it turned out, the overnight leaders by two points from their fellow countrymen, UKR9855 (Danyil Martynov and Pavlo Merezhko) had an disappointing race and finished in 35th place.

This left the door open and a fifth by UKR9855 took UKR9905 – Tasmania Devil, saw Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk sail into the overall lead by six points.

However, the most exciting part of Race 11 was that Australia did indeed score a trifecta! Australian champions Sam Tiedemann and Hugo Allison from Hobart’s Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Emily Goodfellow and Alexandra Hill and Darcy Baranowski and Dominic Randall, from Royal Geelong Yacht Club in Victoria took out the first three places. Heat 11 placings were:

1. AUS9531 – Phoenix – Sam Tiedemann and Hugo Allison – SBSC
2. AUS9628 – It’s Pink – Emily Goodfellow and Alexandra Hill – RGYC
3. AUS9523 – Brothers in Arms – Darcy Baranowski and Dominic Randall – RGYC

Although the wind was strengthening, PRO Nick Hutton was determined to get one last race in and he managed to achieve it. Luckily so, as the gusts certainly were proving a handful after the race was over.

Race 12 was set to be a battle between the two Ukrainian crews and an exciting one it proved to be.

UKR9855 – Danyil and Pavlo managed to take the lead and win the race. They then had to wait on the other side of the finish line to see where the fellow countrymen would finish. Unfortunately for them Oleksandr and Andriy sailing UKR9905 finished in fifth place, making them the International Cadet World Champions for 2012!

The final results for Race 12 were:

1. UKR9855 - Danyil Martynov and Pavlo Merezhko
2. GBR9876 – Zest – Emma White and Ellie Wooton
3. AUS9523 – Brothers in Arms – Darcy Baranowski and Dominic Randall – RGYC

Oleksandr and Andriy did not win won a race but their worst result was a seventh, consistency winning them the Championship, perhaps also helped along by the name of their boat 'Tasmanian Devil'!!

In contrast, UKR9855 - Danyil Martynov and Pavlo Merezhko won five out of the twelve races yet fell short of winning the Championship by two points.

Third place went to the British crew, GBR9000 – White Stuff, sailed bu Alex Corby and Robert Keen. This was the first time that a British crew on the podium at an International Cadet World Championships which in recent years has been dominated by the Polish and the Australians.

The Australian fought to the very end, with three crews in the top 10. From the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, Darcy Baranowski and Dominic Randall and Liam Robinson and Nathan Field from Royal Geelong Yacht Club and from Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Samantha Bailey and Laura Cooper.

The final standings for the 2012 International Cadet World Championships are:

1. UKR9905 – Tasmania Devil - Oleksandr Izarov and Andriy Kalinchuk (32 pts)
2. UKR9855 - Danyil Martynov and Pavlo Merezhko (34 pts)
