Make sure sailing is fun!
Mon, 31 Dec 2012

Make sure sailing is fun! That was the message to the young sailors at McCrae from Olympic medallists Nathan Outteridge, Iain Jensen and Olivia Price. During the lunch break in the Pacer Nationals the young sailors, along with the not so young, gathered on the upper deck of McCrae Yacht Club for a Q&A with the Gold and Silver medallists from London 2012.

Questions ranged from the technical about two boat tuning and the differences in sails and spars, to the 'why are you called Goobs?'

There was an audible gasp when Nathan Outteridge told of how Tom Slingsby was on board America’s Cup boat Oracle during the infamous capsize. Outteridge was keen to point out that he loves sailing different boats and is always learning. Although he’s on holiday at the moment he’s down at McCrae to support his sister who is sailing a 49er FX but also sail his Moth in preparation for the Nationals at Lake Macquarie.

Out on the water the conditions were more forgiving than yesterday with a 12-15 knots southwesterly. Henry and Grant Makin AUS 2060 were the winners today with two bullets and a second. Race seven saw them finish sixth and leaves them in second overall five points behind Tom Signato and Joel Turner AUS 1929. Signato and Turner scored one bullet today with their other results out of the top three.

Will Phillips and Iain Jensen AUS 1261 continued to dominate 49er fleet but a shocker of a start in race six which saw them having to tack out and duck sterns means they now have a second in their near perfect score line. Jasper Warren and Luke Parkinson AUS 111 have established a good lead and are currently sitting in second place on 15 points ahead of third placed Peter Kendall and Bryce Waters AUS 1142 on 29.

James Sly and Sam Phillips AUS 1287 will be keen to put in some good results tomorrow as they sit just behind Kendall and Waters on 31 points and Sly is certainly keen for a podium finish. Sly commented that sailing with Phillips has been 'an amazing learning experience and the conditions are great'.

The top three in the 49erFX fleet remain close with just four points between them. Each crew scored a bullet today but Olivia Price and Alanna Clancy are in first on 14 points with Tessa Parkinson and Kate Lathouras just a point behind on 15 and Haylee Outteridge and Alison Dale on 18. With Parkinson and Lathouras currently counting a DNF and Outteridge and Dale a DNS positions will no doubt change tomorrow once the first race drop comes into play.
