Victorian Moth Grand Prix - Round 2 equals crashes and carnage
Wed, 31 Oct 2012
Round two of the KA Sail Victorian Moth Grand Prix Series was filled with high-speed runs and spectacular crashes. Sailed from McRae Yacht Club as part of their Open Day, the eighty plus fleet witnessed how fast foiling Moths can sail.
With two races sailed in 15-20+knots action was on the cards from the outset. Moments before the first start Richard Jackson foiled into the start line at close to 25 knots, cartwheeling in front of the committee boat, much to the delight and applauses of other sailors in various classes. Shortly after Jackson and Paul Fleming collided finishing Jackson’s day before crossing the start line. The first leg saw Sam England, Andrew McDougall and Leigh Dunstan battling it out for the lead. As the three rounded the top mark Dunstan capsized leaving McDougall and England to fight it out for the lead for the rest of the race. McDougall ran away with the win, from England in second and Dunstan in third.
Between races McDougall had a light bulb moment where he realised that he’d made the classic sailor error, ‘forgot to put my bungs in!’ Racing to the beach McDougall emptied as much water as he could, before heading back out to re-join the racing.
As race two started it was again England and Dunstan fighting hard for the lead sailing most of the leg within metres of one another. Another spectacular capsize by Dunstan saw Kohie Kajimoto come through to challenge England for the lead. McDougall who was now a lap behind rounded the bottom mark with the leaders and provided the most entertaining capsize of the day, with his boat unexpectedly finding another gear. As it exhilarated McDougall was promptly ejected from the back of the boat. Kajimoto pounced on the final leg with exceptional downwind speed taking the win from England in second and Dunstan in third.
Third place for this round went to Andrew McDougall, from Kohie Kajimoto in second and Sam England in first.
The Victorian Moth Association is very fortunate to have some fantastic supporters for the KA Sail Grand Prix Series with KA Sail, Selden Deck Hardware and Magic Marine all supporting the events. The top three places for each round all receive a prize for their efforts with gear from Magic Marine and vouchers from Selden Deck Hardware. KA Sail is providing an overall prize for the series.
After two rounds of the KA Sail Grand Prix Series Leigh Dunstan is in third place from Andrew McDougall in second and Sam England in first place.
Round three of the series will be sailed from Mt Martha Yacht Club on the 2nd December, stay tuned………
