Zippier takes out the Sports Boats NSW State Titles

The 2013 Australian Sports Boat Association (ASBA) NSW Titles have been run and won over the RMYC Toronto course with Sydney boat Zippier (Andrew Waugh) getting its name on the perpetual trophy and also collecting the winning Gill jacket in Division One.
The weather system moving through the mid north coast on Friday and Saturday didn’t help matters with racing abandoned on Saturday due to strong winds. The challenge then became to get as many races in as possible on the Sunday and still allow time for crews from VIC and QLD to get on the road home. In the end 5 races where completed with all races to count. A great effort from the volunteers at the host club RMYC.
Raptor (Mark Buchbach) travelled down from Brisbane for the weekend and pushed Zippier all the way to finish third overall and winner of Division Two. Mark Griffiths (Circus School), doing his second SMS event, finished second overall and second in Division Two.
Race three saw a massive wind shift shorten the course and bring the fleet down to the finish and it was this race that impacted on the results most of all. Zippier however was the most consistent crew over the weekend, never finishing worse than fifth and topping it all off with a win in the last race.
With a diverse fleet, ASBA has made the decision to run two divisions within the fleet as well as overall honours at it’s events – this way we can hand out more 3 Oceans Wine and Gill clothing. The division split is based around a boats displacement to sail area ratio. It allows like boats to race one another and also compete as a whole to be the overall winner.
The top three in Division One was filled by the crew on the Melges 24 Watch Me (Matt Bonser) doing their first ASBA event in their new boat and the T7 Zip (Michael Tarrant), also doing his first ASBA/SMS event.
Rounding out the top three in Division Two was the hometown crew on Stealthy (Bob Cowan).
Sports Boat Month continues this weekend, but on the opposite side of the country, with the ASBA West Australian State Titles in Mandurah. The fleet is building and crews are gearing up for a great event and a massive night at Hogs Breath Cafe after racing.
Victorian State Titles are next at RBYC over the weekend of 23-24 March and then the big one – ASBA National Titles at Royal Yacht Club of Victoria over the Easter weekend
