World ARC 2014 - One year on

by World Cruising Club on 8 Jan 2015
Cape Town 5310 - World ARC 2014 World Cruising Club http://www.worldcruising.com
For the World ARC 2014 fleet January 2015 marks a significant milestone. Exactly one year on since their voyage began in Saint Lucia, they have been on an adventure exploring the spectacles of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Now, with the fleet moored at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town it’s almost time to once again set sail and get back on the ocean.

Over the festive period, crews used their time to take a well-deserved rest with many flying home to be with family and friends. Alternatively many had their loved ones join them in South Africa making the most of their time visiting the in numerous game parks and exploring the multitude of vineyards in the region. New Years at the V&A Waterfront proved to be a spectacle with 164,000 people filling the area entertained by several bands and an impressive firework display.

As skippers and crews begin to finalise preparations for themselves and their boats for Leg 15 (Cape Town to Salvador Brazil via St Helena), the atmosphere once again has begun to build. After being on land for a month or more it's evident that the fleet are ready to get back to sea. summed up the feeling of most participants:

With only three days to go before the start on Saturday, the fleet can look forward to a reunion/farewell party on Thursday, skipper’s briefing on Friday and chance to hike up Table Top Mountain or visit Robben Island before embarkingon their final ocean crossing.
