SLAM Combined High Schools Championship - A fleet of more than 125 boats was on hand to greet starters on day one at Belmont, Lake Macquarie.
With a picture perfect day and light and variable winds, race organisers were forced to postpone the start due to the oscillating breeze on the race area.
The Invitational race eventually saw the breeze settle in to a moderate 13-16knt Nor’wester. With dark storm clouds to the south, conditions quickly changed when a 30+knt front moved through the fleet. Competitors found the breeze tough going and Race organisers soon decided that the conditions were to dangerous to continued and postponed racing for the day.
With the extent of the damage sustained to boats assessed once on shore, many of the competitors will be working well into the night to ensure repairs are completed for racing tomorrow. Special mention to one of the regatta sponsors DeckHardware, for assisting many boats with repairs and fittings. Strong breezes are predicted for next few days with breezes easing later in the regatta.
