Viper 640 Western Australian State Championships - Inaugural Australian Viper 640 Regatta jon stubbs
While the Viper 640 has been sailing in Australia for five years, this weekend is the first time Vipers will sail as one design class in their inaugural regatta – The Western Australian State Viper 640 Championships.
The Viper 640 started their Australian sailing by joining the large number of sportsboats sailing on the Swan River in a mixed sportsboat fleet. It proved to be a good all-round performer winning many of the short course series and the ASBA state championship.
In 2014, Tim Reger and his crew sailed their Viper to victory in the Australian Sportsboat Championships off Fremantle. Vipers continue to sail in mixed sportsboat fleets throughout Australia
Being a one design class, the aim has always been to sail in mixed sports boat racing, but also to sail as a one design class whenever possible. The Viper 640 class association is holding The Western Australian State Championships out of South of Perth Yacht Club this coming weekend. A fleet of 10 boats will be sailing.
The strong local fleet will be joined by some special invitees.
Americas cup legend and top Etchell sailor, Skip Lissiman will join the fleet for the weekend.
Top skiff sailor, Scott Glaskin will be competitive, with his knowledge and experience in 49’ers, 16 and 18 foot skiffs.
Murray Howson, who sailed in the recent North American Viper 640 Championships, will be travelling up from Albany.
The forecast for Saturday is 18 knots + .......all day..... Perfect!
