Eighteen sailors took part in an end-of-season junior race day at West Lancs Yacht Club (WLYC), competing for the Brasileiro Trophy, and the sailing conditions were great. When most OnBoard sessions had already finished, this club’s OB kids were still sailing in one of the fleets?!
The sailors were divided into four fleets based on their level of sailing ability. Each fleet sailed three races with one discard available, and the winners were:
• OnBoard - Elliott Goldup
• Beginner - Jolyon Cropper
• Intermediate - Fleur Birchall-Vural
• Advanced - Alastair Rimmer
The Brasileiro Trophy and prizes are donated each year by former WLYC member Dougie Hague. The Trophy is a half model of a ship, mounted on the wall of the club. Its unusual name comes from the company which owned the full-size vessel, Petroleo Brasileiro SA. Dougie was a naval architect and marine engineer surveyor who worked in Rio de Janeiro for many years.
During the presentation, senior sailing instructor Bob Caton acknowledged in particular the help from Sylvia Gilland for organising each week's attendance and progress and also Stella Pettifer for providing galley refreshments with her team throughout the season.
