Volvo Ocean Race – Especialistas nomeados pela ISAF decidem, nesta quarta-feira (3), penalizar três barcos por infrações ocorridas durante a etapa 7. Team SCA, MAPFRE e Dongfeng Race Team perderam pontos.

A classificação da Volvo Ocean Race mudou após o veredito de um júri, formado pela ISAF - Federação de Vela Internacional - que penalizou três equipes durante a disputa da sétima etapa da Volta ao Mundo, entre Newport, nos Estados Unidos, e Lisboa, em Portugal. Team SCA (Sam Davies / GBR), Dongfeng Race Team (Charles Caudrelier / FRA) e MAPFRE (Iker Martínez / ESP) admitiram ter navegado em uma área imprópria no Oceano Atlântico e perderam pontos.

O resultado da decisão muda a tabela de classificação. O vice-líder agora é o Team Brunel com 22 pontos perdidos. O mesmo número do Dongfeng Race Team, que perde nos critérios de desempate. O MAPFRE, do brasileiro André 'Bochecha' Fonseca, perdeu um ponto e a quarta colocação para o Team Alvimedica. Ambos têm 27 pontos perdidos. O Team SCA foi penalizado com dois pontos e está em sexto no geral com 43. 'Não tivemos vantagens esportivas com isso. Foi um engano da nossa parte', disse Sam Davies, do Team SCA.

O comandante do MAPFRE, Xabi Fernandez, lamentou a decisão. 'Perder um ponto na atual fase é ruim. Foram muitas horas de sacrifício, trabalho, esforço e riscos. Nós acreditamos que poderia ter outras sanções, como tempo em vez de pontos, para compensar o erro, não alterando a classificação geral'.

As três equipes reconheceram terem cometido as infracções, mas todos disseram que houve uma 'confusão' sobre o sistema de separação do tráfego (TSS).

Agora, as equipes precisam se preparar para a oitava etapa, que começa neste domingo (7). Os barcos deixam Lisboa com destino à cidade francesa de Lorient para um percurso de 647 milhas náuticas.
