Vision Surveys Airlie Beach Race Week - Sports Boats shine on Day two
by Tracey Johnstone on 10 Aug 2014
John Rae's Vivace powers their way to their third win and overall lead - Vision Surveys Airlie Beach Race Week 2014 Shirley Wodson
Vision Surveys Airlie Beach Race Week 2014 -Day two dawned with bruised and battered skippers and crews hoping for some relief from yesterday’s tough Vision Surveys 25th Airlie Beach Race Week racing conditions.
The fleet headed out to the start line in sunshine and a building breeze kicking 20 to 25 knots in Pioneer Bay and similar conditions out wide. All divisions, except the Sports Boats, enjoyed a quick ride out across the bay, around White Rock, West Molle and return.
The Sports Boats stayed in the bay for a windward-leeward race day. The fleet were on fire after a dramatic first day.
Late to the start line by about 30 seconds was the Conquistador team. They worked until the late hours of last night to repair the broken rig and straighten the bent rudder from yesterday’s race. Dale Mitchell was the team’s enthusiastic chief engineer of the rebuild and single believer that the job could be done in time. He tapped into his local connections, including his own business, to make it happen. 'We have the local Ullman Sails loft here.
'There was a little bit of conversation on the boat and more in the car park as they decided whether to go home, go cruising on a Beneteau or put some effort in and try to fix it. David Forrest from Hawke’s Boatyard really helped us out. He supplied all the carbon for us,' Mitchell said.
The Conquistador team then turned their misfortune into a small fortune as they delivered consecutive second places to put them in third overall.
The star of the day was John Rae’s Vivace. He confidently led the fleet around the course for the two races. 'We had about 20 to 25 knots in the bay. We had a good start in the first race and good boat speed. We were mostly making our gains on the downwind legs. It was lucky we only had to do two windward-leewards, to be honest.
'We’re hoping for a lighter day tomorrow,' Rae said.
Annika Fredriksson’s Ocean Crusader survived yesterday’s big blow, saving their drama for today. Fellow Darwin sailor Rory Hinton found himself going for a short swim during Race two. 'We went in for a gybe and I laid the boat down on its side. I got the kite sheet behind the boom and Rory went down to try and retrieve it and that’s when it happened,' Fredriksson said. The retrieval of Hinton went like clockwork as they dragged him back on board and continued the race.
In IRC Racing, Tony Kirby’s Ker 46 Patrice team pulled off another win to keep them in first place overall. Stacked with a star crew including tactician Darren Jones, along with Richard Grimes, Ben Davis, Gail Harland and Ian Walker, to name just a few of them, they had just the right pace to keep the Cookson 50s in check. 'I’m not surprised by the speed of Patrice. We haven’t raced Victoire since Hobart and we have done a lot of racing since then. We have really stepped up a few notches and done a few little optimisations in the meantime. I knew they would be surprised about how fast we are,' Kriby said.
Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban finished second on corrected time, two minutes behind Patrice. Daryl Hodgkinson’s Victoire had a better day today after struggling in yesterday’s race with a smaller crew number. He kept fellow Cookson 50, Colin Woods’s Pretty Fly III in check to take third on corrected time.
Performance Racing Division one saw John Leman’s Farr 40 Bobby’s Girl step up a notch to take first place in his division’s passage race. Yesterday they had to contend with a blown spinnaker and a damaged main. Today, they got what they came here for, Leman said. 'We didn’t have to finish off in the cold rain like yesterday. Today we got some warm sunshine.'
In second place was Trevor Bailey’s Carbon Credits and in third, Walter Lewin’s Vento. In last place was Colin and Denise Wilson’s Never a Dull Moment, spending the last leg of the race no doubt distracted by their large white kite, or what was left of it, streaming out from the rig for the whole fleet to see.
After two races Bobby’s Girl leads the fleet on four points ahead of Pierre Gal and Doug Gayford’s Dolce and Stewart Lewis’s Ocean Affinity.
Division two Performance saw Roger Jepson’s Melbourne Gentlemen’s Club team on the little Where’s Wal step up to first place ahead of Angus Fletcher’s Tevake II and Gary McCarthy’s Brilliant Pearl. A blown masthead asymmetrical and torn No 3 jib after they encountered gusts of 27 knots, slowed down the already tired Brilliant Pearl crew. They are hoping for easier conditions tomorrow.
These results have kept Brilliant Pearl in first place overall followed by Tevake II and Jeff Rice’s Rogue in third.
With lots of spray the multihulls charged quickly around the passage course. In the Racing Division one, Wayne Bloomer’s Chillpill moved up into first place ahead of the fastest boat of the day, George Owen’s APC Mad Max and Andrew Stransky’s Fantasia. This result places Chillpill in first overall with last year’s winner, Fantasia, in second.
Multihull Racing Division two honours went to Drew Carruthers’s Rushhour, giving him two firsts from two races and first place overall. In second place again was Bob Critchley’s Cool Change and in third place, Danny McMillan’s Purple Haze.
The Multihull Cruising Division is subject protest. The preliminary results are first place to Colin Maslen’s Ha Ha, second place to Norm Fraser’s Wet Bar and third to Brian Forrester’s Drumbeat. This result keeps the Vision Survey’s Drumbeat in first overall, Ken Gibon’s Resolute II in second and Steve Halter’s Cheetah into third overall.
David Stoopman’s Samskara took out today’s handicap honours in the Cruising Spinnaker Division 1. In second was the maxi yacht Condor skippered by David Molloy and in third was Rob Markshall’s Femme Fatale. This places Samskara in first overall, followed by Ian Griffith’s Witchy Woman in second and Femme Fatale in third.
A delighted Stoopman suggests that coming from Melbourne has helped his team to sail the Whitsunday conditions. 'Coming from Melbourne we are used to sailing in strong winds,' Stoopman said.
With the winds predicted to ease tomorrow, he now plans to look over his shoulder a bit more now that he knows who his competition is. 'We are still trying to work out them out. Now they are becoming the main nemesis so we have a bit of work to do pick them out of the crowd because I think they are a smaller boat than us. I know that they are there, but we just need to find out who they are so we can manage them a bit better,' he added.
While the Cruising Spinnaker Division two honours went to Bob Penty’s Great White followed by Tich Timmermans’s Against the Wind, it’s Nic Cox and Col Thomas’s ‘salt water athletes on tour’ team on the Adams 10, Ella, who are sailing consistently to take their second third place to secure first overall after two races.
Cruising Spinnaker Division three results are subject to protest. At this time, handicap honours went to Peter Mitchelson’s Lorna Rose Too. In second was Bob McCamley’s bright red Slingshot. In third place was John Fowell’s Ells Bells. Overall, Tom Vujasinovic’s Masquerade is in first place with Ells Bells in second and Don Bowden’s Checkmate in third.
Last, but not least, the Cruising Non Spinnaker Division was taken out by Greg Hudson’s Saltydog ahead of Colin Forster’s Esoteric and Bryndon Wooding’s Adrenalin. Overall, Saltydog is first from John Galloway’s QLD Marine Services. In third is Belinda Cooper’s La Quilter.
Racing for all divisions continues tomorrow. The courses are passage races for Cruising Spinnaker and Cruising Non Spinnaker, Performance, Multihull Racing, Multihull Cruising and Sports Boats. The IRC Division will be doing windward-leeward races in Pioneer Bay.
