Tornado Europeans - Greece has end to end win

by Tornado-Class on 2 Jul 2016
Fleet in action - 2016 Tornado Europeans Tessarini Fabio
After a great race and after taking their usual bath on the last day of the event, Nikolaos Mavros and Alexandros Tagaropoulos from Greece managed to maintain their lead since the beginning of the championship, becoming this year’s Open European Champions! The broken trapeze wire on the penultimate race was not able to deprive them of this well-deserved victory!

Close behind them is Maria Tsaousidou, Greece, and Marc Baier, Germany, a mixed crew who had an exceptional performance by scoring four bullets in the event and finishing in the top five at the rest of the races.

They are also the winners of the Mixed and Youth (both under 26) category!!

On the third place of the Open category are the brothers Marcel and Joerg Steiner, Switzerland, who seem to perform much better in stronger wind. This was verified on the last day as they got the bullet in the first and came third in the second race of the day, passing in front of the Austrians, Dietmar and Silvia Salzman, just before the finish.

So Dietmar and Silvia Salzman, the father and daughter crew, stand fourth in the Open and second in the Mixed. They seemed to prefer lighter wind conditions!

Fifth in the Open category is another crew from Austria: Blum Jens and Fritz Rupert!

The third mixed crew who also came sixth overall is the Polish Zbigniew Piekarski and Ewa Gorska!

For those who wonder, the wind at the last racing day was Northeast and its speed reached the 14 knots!

We need to stress that Congrega Velisti Cesenatico conducted a fantastic event. Everything was carefully organized both on water, overtaking the difficulties of the current and the wind shifts and on land with a rich social event program.

Alexandros mentioned: 'I have to admit that our team has been through a lot of difficulties but has also achieved great wins the last years. We got really upset after the last World championship as we lost the place in the podium due to material failure on the last day. We deserved a medal there.

Nevertheless, we managed to overcome our bad psychological situation and in just three days to be ready and win the next race, the Europeans. This was really hard but that is what makes the difference between a good and a better athlete. I am very proud of our team.

It is never easy to win any championship, especially when a total of 10 races is sailed. You need to sail your best every day and without making mistakes or at least by making fewer mistakes than your opponents. When you start a race standing first you get an additional pressure, as every day you need to prove that you are the best.

In order to win, besides the lot of training you need to be sure of the good quality of your boat and equipment. You need to take care of even the last detail as there is where the devil hides!!'

Nikos adds: 'It was a very well-organized event, with excellent hospitality. Thanks to all who worked for this venue and the ITA for its great job. 'Thank you to the organisers and volunteers!

Congratulations to the winners! Next European Championship: 17-23 July in Dervio.
