As traditionally organized by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta management team, with logistic assistance from the Royal Thai Navy, more than 100 yachts staged a “sail-past” of a Royal Thai Navy frigate, anchored mid-stream off Kata Beach.
This is a nautical tribute for the King’s 86th birthday and it is a most appropriate gesture to the Royal Gold-Medal-winning helmsman who is also the Royal Patron of the Phuket Regatta as a birthday tribute to HM the King of Thailand.
In the evening, at a propitious time, co-ordinated kingdom-wide, there will be a candle-lit ceremony and resounding “Chai-Yo” for the Monarch.
Meantime, in continuing clement weather, cloud cover, with sunny patches, moderate seas and north-easterlies, if a little fickle, nevertheless allowed the 105-strong fleets, to complete their races.
On top of the pile after the Jaguar Land Rover races, is undisputed master of the IRC Zero Class, Aussie ace, Ray Roberts who is back in Phuket after a long absence, spent winning many Asian regattas.
Racing will continue tomorrow, with the very elegant Awards Ceremony and final prize-giving, presided over by HM the King’s Personal Representative at the Kata Beach Resort and Spa tomorrow evening.
