To help celebrate the 70th edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race the Australian National Maritime Museum has honoured the CYCA by creating an intimate photographic exhibition in their Tasman Light Gallery.

In collaboration with Ian Mainsbridge, Richard Bennett, Daniel Forster, Carlo Borlenghi and design houses Reichel Pugh and Farr Yacht Design, the exhibition highlights some magnificent images captured over the 69 year history of the race and demonstrates the advances in yacht design from sketch drawings of Kathleen Gillett to CAD drawings of 100 foot maxi yachts.

One of the toughest ocean races in the world, this international sporting event began in 1945 when a cruise to Hobart became a race amongst friends from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia.

Starting in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day and finishing before New Year’s Eve at Hobart on the Derwent River, the race is characterised by its attraction of the intrepidly minded. Drawing together amateur and professional sailors, production yachts, previous generation designs, historic craft and state-of-the-art racing yachts, the massed fleet assembles each year to test human ingenuity, determination, skill and luck in the theatre of the untamed ocean.

David Payne, Curator, at the Australian National Maritime Museum has created an excellent online digital story which compliments the exhibition on display in the Tasman Light Gallery.

The Exhibition commences November 2014 and runs until March 2015 and is open to CYCA members, guests and the general public. For more information about hours and admission details please click here.

For the duration of the Sydney Hobart Exhibition the Australian National Maritime Museum is offering CYCA members (on production of your CYCA Membership card at the ticket desk) complimentary Galleries Ticket (gold coin donation requested).

We hope you get the opportunity to visit the Australian National Maritime Museum while the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race exhibition is on display.
