SouthernFurl booms at Sydney International Boat Show

by Ben Gladwell on 28 Jul 2015 Southern Spars representatives Dean Harper and Jamie Waters will be attending the Sydney International Boat Show, held in Sydney’s Darling Harbour from July 30 to August 3.

Dean and Jamie will be on location to provide information to customers and distributors interested in Southern Spars’ new range of SouthernFurl booms. The new range brings Southern Spars’ highly successful superyacht furling technology to boats of all sizes. Already they have been fitted to many yachts in the 40-60 foot range with great results.

Peter Hrones, director of Windcraft Group Sydney, competed in the 2014 Sydney-Hobart race on board a Moody 54DS, fitted with a SouthernFurl boom and was very impressed.

“The SouthernFurl boom did not just look good it performed fantastically when required. In the last two hours we reefed and un-reefed about seven times. Eventually, we could do this in a tack so eventually we got it down to only 10 seconds to shake a reef without losing any speed. Also, the strength of the boom is incredible as the owner of the Moody did accidental gybe twice, due to some freak waves, in the Bass Strait and the boom was as solid as a rock. I believe any other boom would have broken in these same conditions.”

The chief benefits of the SouthernFurl booms are that they allow sailors to quickly reduce sail without leaving the safety of the cockpit. The design allows full-length sail battens, which gives your sail a better flying shape and decreases flogging, which significantly increases the lifespan of your sail. They also have an integrated sail cover that deploys to protect your sail from UV radiation. Their carbon construction is light and stiff, requiring minimal maintenance while the open front design makes them very forgiving of a less than perfect furl.
