Following the earlier news that Singapore had qualified the nation in the Laser men's event for 2016 Rio Olympics at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain, now Elizabeth Yin has successfully secured the nation another spot following the conclusion of the Finals series at the world championships.

The Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championship is the first Olympic Qualification regatta for the 2016 Rio Olympics with 50% of spots up for grabs across all ten events.

In the Laser Radial gold fleet, there were 35 nations competing for the 19 quota slots available from these first Rio 2016 qualifiers. The varied and testing sailing conditions in northern Spain saw frequent lead changes and tight racing. Singapore’s Elizabeth Yin, a London 2012 Olympian, ended the seven race series strongly with a consistent scoreline of 38-28-7-1-16-9-46 to finish in 19th place overall and as the 15th placed nation, secured one of the 19 country slots available.

The 19 nations who have qualified from Santander 2014 (in finishing order) are:

Laser Radial

1. The Netherlands
2. Czech Republic
3. Sweden
4. Belgium
5. Finland
6. Denmark
7. Croatia
8. Great Britain
9. France
10. New Zealand
11. China
12. USA
13. Italy
14. Canada
15. Singapore
16. Ireland
17. Norway
18. Lithuania
19. Belarus

In the 49er FX class, Singapore’s Griselda Khng and Sara Tan, who are currently in 18th place placing Singapore as the 11th nation after 3 races, will continue to fight for one of the 10 places on offer in their class. Racing is set to go till this Sunday, 21st September.

The Singapore Sailing Federation congratulates all sailors who have done Singapore proud and wishes all the rest who are still racing at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships all the best for their respective events.
