Sandringham Yacht Club extends an invitation to all off the beach classes with a Yachting Victoria yardstick to compete in their signature Sail Sandy Regatta 2015 to be conducted on the unobstructed waters of Port Phillip over the weekend of October 17 and 18, 2015.
Sail Sandy has become the traditional season-opening regatta for off the beach sailing on Port Phillip. Conducted at Sandringham Yacht Club for more than twenty years, attendances have been steadily increasing with the 2014 fleet exceeding 210 boats.
All monohull and catamaran classes with a YV yardstick are welcome. 2014 saw Catamarans racing at Sail Sandy for the first time and the excitement generated by the multi- hulled speedsters on the short course racing was breathtaking. Already we have a number of Vipers and A-Class cats registered to race in 2015 and we look forward to a growing and competitive multi-hull fleet.
Monohull classes racing at Sail Sandy typically include Optimists, Sabots, Minnows, O’Pen Bics, 125s, International Cadets, 420s, 470s, Contenders, Tasars, Sabres, OK Dinghies, Finns, all three varieties of Lasers, 29ers, 49ers, International 14ft skiffs and Kite boards. In 2014 we welcomed the innovative and exciting RS 100 and RS 200 dinghies, both classes that will be sailing in greater numbers in 2015. They will be joined by the new RS Aero single handed dinghies and we will watch their performance with interest.
Sail Sandy always has a sizeable fleet of Optimists but in 2015, we extend a special invitation to Green Fleet and Tackers Optimists who will have their own special course conveniently located just to the north of the SYC marina.
Sail Sandy 2014 saw a record entry of more than 210 boats but the continuing growth of off-the beach sailing and the introduction of exciting and appealing new classes should see an even larger number of sailors taking part in this iconic event over the third weekend in October. Sail Sandy is once again part of the season long Victorian Yachting Cup championship series sponsored by OTB Marine.
Trophies are awarded for one-design classes with sufficient entries (10+) or for Combined Divisions grouped under YV Yardstick with the overall winners of Sail Sandy being calculated using results weighted across all classes and divisions. Overall Sail Sandy honours have been spread across many different classes over the years.
Sandringham Yacht Club offers world class facilities, expert race management and a veritable army of enthusiastic and skilled volunteers so you can be assured of a great time and fantastic racing at Sail Sandy 2015. The friendly canteen staff will be providing a quality selection of food and beverages at reasonable prices, while for coffee lovers, a special treat is in store.
Non-sailors, family members and guests are welcome and there are excellent viewing opportunities from the comfort of the elevated SYC northern deck which allows a spectacular view over the nearby race courses. The deck is conveniently located adjacent to the Members Bar and the highly acclaimed Harbour View Restaurant.
Sandringham Yacht Club looks forward to welcoming all competitors to Sail Sandy 2015
