Sail Paradise 2014 - 505s to sail amongst all competitors

by Bronwen Ince on 17 Jan 2014
Southport Yacht Club - Gold Coast - Sail Paradise 2014 Southport Yacht Club http://www.southportyachtclub.com.au
Sail Paradise 2014, hosted by Southport Yacht Club, will see the 505's competing in a class of their own. The 505's will sail amongst all competitors at Australia's premier east coast yachting event, to be conducted from 14-16 March 2014.

Southport Yacht Club's race officers will see a difference in this year's regatta racing with a unique method of gate starts in the 505 class.

The high performance one-design International 505 allows the boats to be set up to the needs of the sailor, rather than controls established by the class association, resulting in a high level of adaptability to sailing styles, this will bring a remarkable wide range of crew weights and configuration to the competition, even in big regattas such as Sail Paradise. Southport Yacht Club expects to see a variety of ages competing in the 505 class with over 10 vessels competing from South East Queensland and a further five from New South Wales.

The 505 is a very popular international class and is raced actively in 18 countries around the world, with over 100 boats attracted to the starting line of the World championships held each year by a rotating continent system. With the continuance of high performance racing being conducted on the Gold Coast, the Southport Yacht Club believe the inclusion of the 505's competing as an annual event at Sail Paradise could be the start of a campaign for a future 505 World Championships on the Gold Coast.

Being sailed on courses set just off the surf-line of the Gold Coast’s magnificent beaches, the entire concept has been based on a plan to provide the highest level of competitive and satisfying summer sailing for crews of a wide range of yachts – from Grand Prix to Cruising – and at the same time present the sailors, their families and friends the chance to enjoy the many holiday pleasures to be found on the Gold Coast.

The public will be able to view Sail Paradise from the beaches and high-rise buildings, watch the yachts depart for racing through the Seaway and return each day, and see the yachts berthed at the Southport Yacht Club. Event website
