SLAM Combined High Schools Champs - Makin makes it back to back wins

Henry Makin (Avondale College) has become only the third skipper in history to win back to back titles in the SLAM Combined High Schools Championship. After winning the title last year in a 16ft Skiff, Makin return this year in a Cherub and teamed up with follow local sailor Jarrod Turner to claim the championship. The pairing proved to be a winning formula with Makin and Turner displaying a turn of speed, skill and tactical awareness.
The final day was not without its dramas. Jess and Tom Grimes (Merewether High) sailing there 29er ‘Swaggamuffin’ were running second going into the final day were OCS in Race seven. However, the pair protested the race committee and the jury found in favour of Grimes, reinstating their position in the race.
Race seven saw Caleb White (Mackillop Senior College) sailing his Hobie 16 ‘Off Tap’ eventually win the race from Makin and in third place Nicholas Hord’s (Lake Munmorah High) ‘Sneaky’ a Taipan 4.9.
The final, Race eight of the championship saw Stephan Hancock (Hills Grammar) steer his Flying 11 ‘Hydromatic’ to a win. In second place was the ever consistent Makin and third ‘Outrageous’ a Flying 11 sailed by Thomas Smith (Holy Cross College).
Overall, Henry Makin and Jarrod Turner sailing their Cherub ‘French Tickler’ proved to be a clear worthy winner of the SLAM Combined High Schools Championship. In second position overall was ‘Swaggamuffin’ a 29er sailed by Jess and Tom Grimes. In third position was Flying 11 ‘Hi Roller’ sailed by Nathan and Jesse Lilley (Balgowlah Boys High).
