Using the weighted points system for defining Olympic Medal Table placings, Australia has again topped the table with their Gold Medal and three Silver Medals won in the 2016 Olympic Sailing Regatta in Rio de Janeiro.

On the basis of allocating 3pts for a Gold medal, 2pts for a Silver and 1pt for a Bronze, Australia top the Medal table with 9pts. Great Britain and New Zealand are tied on 8pts with the tie being broken in favour of the British team, who won two Gold Medals compared to the single Gold Medal won by New Zealand.

The Netherlands take fourth place overall, with two Gold medal wins.

After the 2012 Olympic Regatta in Weymouth, Australia also topped the Medal table, but were tied with hosts, Great Britain on 11pts. The tie was broken in favour of Australia who won three Gold medals and one Silver compared to the single Gold medal and four silver medals won by the British team.

Seventeen countries won Olympic Sailing medals at the 2016 Olympic Regatta compared to 15 countries at Weymouth.

New Zealand improved their place in 2016, moving from fifth in 2012 to third in 2016. Spain was third on the Sailing medal rankings in 2012, winning two Gold medals, but failed to win a single medal in 2016.
