Queensland Youth Week 2014 - Exciting sailing on day 2

by Miles Ruge on 9 Jul 2014 Queensland Youth Week 2014 - A change in wind speed and direction greeted competitors on the second day of racing at the Australian Midwinter Championships 2014 at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Manly.

After a testing first day of racing in variable winds, competitors revelled in the chance to push themselves and their boats with some more challenging conditions. Around twelve knots of North-westerly breeze fuelled an exciting day of racing across the three separate courses on Waterloo Bay, with over 250 boats contesting the conditions.

On Alpha course, the farthest racing area of the regatta, the doublehanders and larger boats made the most of the exposure to the increasing wind and swell, showing impressive speed on the leeward stretches of the course gybing under spinnaker.

Having dominated the 29ers so convincingly on day one, Kurt Hansen set out to maintain his form with the wind. Again the New South Wales sailor proved unstoppable, pulling away to a lead of more than ten lengths on many an occasion. Gold Coast sailor Ezra Pritchard and David Mckay fought a close battle late in the day chasing placing’s in Hansen’s wake. After impressive form off the line on day one, Claire Mcinally found the conditions tough going, sailing well down the fleet. At the end of the day’s proceedings it was Pritchard and Harry Lawson who made up the series placings behind the unattainable lead of Hansen.

In the 420s, Dana Tavener lead the fleet home under spinnaker in the second race of the day but was unable to continue her dominance in the third race which got underway with a testing windward first work that saw the fleet scattered across the course.

'You had to get on the right side of the course pretty quickly otherwise you’d be left behind,' Tavener said.

Alec Brodie worked through the fleet to a commanding win in the final race of the day, but it was Tavener who emerged at the top of the standings after backing her win with solid finishes in the other races of the day.

The Flying11s also proved home to some fiercely contested sailing with Matt Rogers and Stephen Hancock virtually inseparable as they jived around the mark in chase of Emma Jones well out in front of the fleet. Tom Crockett continues to lead the series after a strong performance on day one, followed by Jones and Simon Murnaghan who advanced through the field with a win and solid placings on day two.

Further down the bay the singlehanded boats also put on a commanding display of sailboat racing in the Laser 4.7 and Radial series on Bravo course. The conditions proved more than testing with one Laser 4.7 capsizing in the blustery conditions. In the Radial class, Richard Maher lead the fleet before turning into the wind and maintained this lead at the next windward mark having pulled clear of Stuart Plenderleith and Finn Alexander jostling for positions in the final race of the day. In the 4.7 class Jordan Makin worked through the field to finish on top of the series with two convincing wins late in the day.

'Physically you were just hiking out all day long, and the chop and wind made it difficult,' said Makin of the conditions.

Plenderleith leads the Radial series into day three.

In the innermost race course the juniors faced the challenging conditions admirably. Having finished the opening day of racing tied for first place, all eyes were on Archie Cropley and Jack Littlechild in the Optimist Open Fleet to see how the series leaders would handle the change in conditions. However, at the end of the day it was local sailor Joshua Vanroon who best managed the conditions and emerged on top of the series after a solid run of wins and placings.

'It was a lot more challenging because I’m really small and I have to work a lot harder,' said Vanroon speaking of sailing in the conditions.

After some confusion on course in the final race of the day, it was Alexander Bijkerk that took the mark towards the finish first but was unable to hold off Vanroon and Tom Green on the line.

In the Sabot class, the youngest sailors braved the testing conditions inside Waterloo Bay with some gutsy sailing. In the final race of the day Henry Larkings lead the juniors around the leeward mark before a tough finish into the gusty North-westerly where he was eventually caught by Christina Bowden and William Wallis who continued his strong form after day one. Larkings leads the series after day two.

Racing continues again tomorrow, with similar conditions expected and rising seas.
