Phuket, December 3, 2007 – The first day of races has come to a close at the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta 2007. Weather conditions were good with the predicted 10 – 15 knot winds holding up to expectations and sailing was competitive. Today’s races were sponsored by TMB Bank and Thai Airways.
Racing class saw Frank Pong’s quick Jelik cross the finish line with a healthy lead, giving him the victory with a corrected time of 4:59:30. Fortis Mandrake placed second while Ray Roberts brought his Quantum Racing boat to third despite having to put together a makeshift crew yesterday after his regular crew’s arrival was delayed. Foxy Lady III didn’t sail as she had drifted away during the night, only to be found miles away unharmed after the races were finished.
Peter Dyer’s Madam Butterfly crossed the line first for a first place win in IRC 2. Skandia and Aquavit IV placed second and third. Royal Thai Navy 1, under the command of Peera Sakultem, placed fourth despite missing the start by a couple of minutes due to engine problems. IRC 2 is expected to see heavy competition this year. Previous class winner La Samudra placed fifth.
In the Firefly 850 Sport class Henry Kaye’s Mamba saw a fast race – crossing the finish not far behind Racing class leader Jelik. She was followed closely by Bill Phelps’s Twin Sharks, who was awarded the win after Mamba retired from the race after finishing. Moto Inzi and The Frog placed second and third.
Principal sponsorship again this year comes from Raimon Land, who have announced support of the event until 2012. Also joining the event as sponsors are Kata Group, TMB Bank Plc, Nautica, Thai Beverages Plc, Thai Airways, Mom Tri’s Boat House, Sunsail, Siam Winery, Coca-Cola and a host of local Phuket businesses which support the event. Media sponsorship in part comes from Phuket Magazine, The Nation and Phuket Gazette.
