Oceania Sailing Federation 2011 - Single Handed Youth Championships

by Oceania Sailing Federation on 2 Jan 2011 The Oceania Sailing Federation (OSAF) 2011 Single Handed Youth Championships will be held on 25th - 30th July 2011. The location will be Aitutaki Lagoon Cook Islands. The classes are Optimist and Laser 4.7 rig. The organisers will provide a minimum of 12 boats in each class.

Optimist Class:
Boats are fibre glass and were initially purchased by Sailing Cook Islands in 1997 as a regatta fleet but have been used for 12 years, therefore variations in hull and gear condition may be evident. The Optimist boats will be rotated in each fleet.

Laser class:
Boats are new ex Performance Sailcraft Australia in September 2009 imported for the Pacific Mini Games and have been used in a total of 3 regattas. The Lasers are maintained by SCI as a regatta fleet and are not used by the Aitutaki Sailing Club

Optimist & Laser Boats - New Option
The possibility of new boats being available for the event & to purchase at the end of the regatta as Regatta boats at a discounted price is being explored. A decision will be known in January 2011 and OSAF member Countries who enter this event will be offered this boat purchase scheme; If Participants are offered this scheme you will be asked to confirm purchase by 30th January 2011. The purchase option will include sea freight delivery to closest port in the country of the Sailor. See Race Boats below.

Eligibility: Oceania countries with membership of OSAF.
Ages: Optimist sailors on 31st December 2011 aged 15 years or under; and under 65kg
Laser 4.7 sailors aged under 18 years on 31st Dec 2011

Entry fee:

Optimist Class AUD$500 per participant includes:
Boat hires (rotation system)
All sailing equipment except sails and personal buoyancy
Daily Lagoon transport to race venue
Official Welcome & Prize Giving Closing functions.
Aitutaki airport transfers.

Laser Class AUD$800 per participant includes:
Boat hire
All sailing equipment except sails and personal buoyancy
Daily Lagoon transport to race venue
Official Welcome & Prize Giving Closing functions.
Aitutaki airport transfers.

Race Boats / Fleet Racing Entries

Optimist Class:
Currently used fibreglass boats will be provided by the organisors on an 'as is – where is basis' and to ensure parity – will be shared and sailed on a rotation system.

Maximum fleet size is 12 boats
Maximum Number of fleets – 3
Maximum entries for each class is 36
Maximum entries per county is 3 (plus 6 additional entries reserved for the host country)

Plans are now being finalised to provide 20 new Optimist boats and if this transpires (deadline 31st Jan 2011) we will amend the fleet size and the number of entries plus adopt the shared system applicable in the Laser class. In this circumstance the following will apply:

Maximum fleet size is 20 boats
Maximum Number of fleets – 3
Maximum entries for each class is 60
Maximum entries per county/State is 3 (plus 6 additional entries reserved for the host)
Any cancellations will be offered to countries on a first come – first served basis

Laser 4.7 Class:
Boats are regatta standard identical boats, new ex the Pacific Mini Games in September 2009 as provided by the Organising Committee. Laser boats will not be rotated however boats will be shared by each fleet so they will not be assigned to an individual.

Number of fleets - 3
Maximum entries for each class is 36
Maximum entries per county is 3 (plus 6 additional entries available for the host)

Plans are now being finalised to provide an additional 8 new Laser boats (deadline 31st January 2011) and if this transpires we will amend the fleet size and the number of entries whilst laser boats will not be rotated however boats will be shared by each fleet so they will not be assigned to an individual. In this circumstance the following will apply:

Maximum fleet size is 20 boats
Maximum Number of fleets – 3
Maximum entries for each class is 60
Maximum entries per county/State is 3 (plus 6 additional entries reserved for the host)
Any cancellations will be offered to countries on a first come – first served basis

Accommodation, transport and meals:
AUD$500 per person includes hostel/Village Hall style accommodation with all meals for 5 days.
Truck style daily transport from the accommodation to the venue will be provided each morning and evening to connect with the schedule to the lagoon venue

Accommodation in Tourist Accommodation and rental vehicles will be available at an additional cost. Details will be posted on the website during January 2011.

Coach and Spectator Boats:
Coach boats and spectator boats will be available on a share basis.
A cost of AUD100 per day plus fuel will apply.

Air Travel:
From home base to Rarotonga and on to Aitutaki and return – own arrangements

Accommodation on Rarotonga:
If required – own arrangements (advice available)

Public liability insurance and damage bond:
Will be required

Umpiring
On the water umpiring (experimental Ax Q) may apply.

Coaching /Rules
A coaching and rules clinic with expert coaches and umpires is planned for all classes on Monday.
