Oceanair International 14 Prince of Wales Cup - And the winner is...

by Mark Jardine on 19 Jun 2016
Katie Nurton and Nigel Ash win the International 14 Prince of Wales Cup Mary Pudney
Katie Nurton and Nigel Ash have won the International 14 Prince of Wales Cup, the one race National Championship for the class. We believe that she is the first female winner of the famous trophy.

We spoke to Katie after the race, 'The race was the standard six-lap windward-leeward but then we had a final leg back into Chichester Harbour to finish off Hayling Island Sailing Club. The wind was coming from the North with a strong ebb tide so we stayed on the Winner Bank for as long as possible while the two leaders who were Stuart Bithell / Sam Pascoe and Archie Massey / Harvey Hillary tacking out into the main channel as it was getting really shallow.'

'Nigel managed to keep the boat heeled at 45 degrees so that we could sail through the shallows and avoid the strong ebb tide. The wind was dropping in the harbour entrance so we went round them and won the race! We hit the bottom a few times and I've got quite bit of work now to do on the hull and foils, but it was worth a bit of filler and sanding.'

On the feeling of becoming the International 14 National Champion Katie said, 'I'm not sure it's sunk in yet as it feels a bit fluky with the wind dying for the leaders, but I guess we went for it on the Winner Bank and won!'
