Roads and Maritime Services has launched a YouTube video to educate and encourage kiteboarders to safely use waterways.
Director of Maritime Angus Mitchell said kiteboarding was a dynamic and increasingly popular sport which will be included in Olympic competition at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
'Waterways such as Botany Bay are popular with people engaging in kiteboarding,' Mr Mitchell said.
'Botany Bay is a busy waterway at times and there is a need for people in all types of craft to be responsible and observe the rules and requirements for safe boating and that includes kiteboarding.
'Kiteboarding literally takes off when the wind conditions go from moderate to fresh and it is important boarders are responsible for the safe use of their craft.'
Mr Mitchell said the YouTube video features a member of the NSW Kiteboarding Association talking about the main message all kiteboarders should abide by; ensuring they are in the clear.
'Clear reminds users to observe five key points: conditions, look, equipment, attitude and respect,' Mr Mitchell said. 'Kiteboarders should ensure they take all conditions into account and look before launching, carry out equipment checks, listen to advice, use their judgment and respect other users.
'Kiteboarding is a wonderful form of exercise combining aspects of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding and even gymnastics into one extreme activity.
'We want people to get out and enjoy the fabulous waterways Sydney has to offer but we also want to ensure this is done safely.'
Mr Mitchell said kiteboarders also need to take particular care when on the beach to ensure their kite lines, which are thin and can be under high tension, are kept well clear of other people to avoid injuries.
'It is also extremely important for kiteboarders not to cut across the bows of larger vessels,' Mr Mitchell said. 'For safety, small less stable craft including kiteboards should keep well clear of larger craft.'
This safe kiteboarding project is a response to the need for increased education identified in the Transport for NSW Botany Bay and Georges River Boating Safety Plan.
