With the cool breeze from the west of 15-20 knots, racing started today on Pittwater just north of Scotland Island. After a spirited start the 10 strong fleet of Melges 24s headed for first of three, windward return races.
With race 1 and 2 going, the local team and current Melges 24 Corinthian World Champions of Cameron Miles, James Mayjor, Craig Poklington and John Bacon on 'RogerThat' finished off the day with a third putting them in front on five points.
'Bandit' keeping them honest with a first, second, and third with a total of six points.
'Kracken', Ayden Menzies' quickly improving team, set them for a podium result with a second, third and fourth, leaving them with nine points.
The ever shifting westerly winds made it tricky, yet at times rewarding with some lines of breeze blowing home some boats to pinch extra places at times. Also costly if you miss the breeze line. This made it imperative to use your whole crew to pick the shifts and breeze lines.
Heavy weather specialists ' No Comment' Dave Young sailed an almost faultless race 3 to finish second to Bandit. After racing Dave said 'I’m really happy with the boat in breeze over 15 kts. We just need to bring that to our light weather sailing and we’ll be there.' With 10 Melges 24’s racing here in mid-winter it shows the strength of the class and commitment of the guys coming to join us.
The simply a whole lot of FUN!!
