Melbourne to Portland Race - New destination for offshore calendar

by Sally Williams on 30 Jul 2013
. .
The Committee of the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria are pleased to announce the Melbourne to Portland race as the first offshore event for season 2013-14 over the Melbourne Cup holiday weekend.

After many requests from members for a change of destination and a new challenge, the Committee decided on Portland based on the facilities available at the new marina and the support of the local Portland Yacht Club, Marina and Local Council.

The Club is a short walk from the Marina and the town just ten minutes away. Portland became Victoria’s first permanent European settlement in 1834 and the town has beautifully maintained heritage buildings, excellent accommodation and great pub fare! Family and friends could enjoy the drive along the Great Ocean Road and greet you at the finish line.

The Race will be a qualifier for the ORCV East and West coast races to Hobart in December 2013 and will replace the Stanley race in 2013. It is intended to hold the Stanley and Portland races on alternating years in the future. Currently, the Stanley port is undergoing an upgrade to the wharf facilities.

Keep an eye on the website for Notice of Race and online entry- coming soon.

Vendée Globe – Thomas Ruyant wins the SNSM Record in St. Nazaire
There were in fact four candidates taking part in the SNSM Record, if we add Bertrand de Broc to this list of three. Now a classic race, this event raises funds for the French lifeboat service and this year, three competitors from the next Vendée Globe were up against each other: Thomas Ruyant, Arnaud Boissières and the Swiss sailor, Alan Roura.

The Vendée Globe goes Asian with Kojiro Shiraishi
Another important step in the internationalisation. For the first time, an Asian is ideally placed to be at the start. Thanks to a neat trajectory and a very decent seventh place in the New York – Vendée transatlantic race, Kojiro Shiraishi has obtained his sailing qualification for the Everest of the seas aboard Spirit of Yukoh. This Bruce Farr designed boat from 2007, built in England, is none other than Alex Thomson’s ex-Hugo Boss (previously called BT and Veolia).
