Matchrace Thailand Championships - Day 1

Matchrace Thailand Championships - Day 1 Jordan Rumsby
The Royal Varuna Yacht Club is hosting the Matchrace Thailand Championships between 5th - 8th March. Although the event has been going for six strong years, it has been upgraded to an ISAF grade 2, achieved by the generous support from sponsors North Sails and Landrover, providing six sets of fantastic new sails. The higher calibre competition means more ISAF matchrace ranking points up for grabs, raising the stakes for all the 10 teams participating.

A perfect 12 knot southwesterly breeze started early in the morning and all weather forecasts suggested good winds and fair skies. A full round-robin series started.

Spectators gathered at the beach bar to watch the Platu 25 class yachts in action, fiercely battling during the pre-start with manoeuvres only inches apart.

Matchrace Thailand veteran Mati Sepp (EST) and Singapore’s Maximilian Soh (SIN), who won the Matchrace Thailand Nationals last week, had the best possible first day by recording five wins each.

Out of the 23 flights in the round robin, 11 have been completed. Tomorrow is likely to bring the conclusion of the round robin series moving into the quarter finals on Saturday. The stage is set!

Results after Day 1:

1st = Maximilian Soh (SIN) 5-0
1st = Mati Sepp (EST) 5-0
3rd Jon Eriksson (FIN) 3-2
4th Staffan Lindberg (FIN) 2-2
5th = Morten Jakobsen (THA) 2-3
5th = Kohei Inchikawa (JPN) 2-3
7th Marek Stanczyk (POL) 2-3
8th Ebrahim Abdulla (BHR) 1-3
