The second Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week has just concluded and competitors, their families and spectators deemed the event a great success. Regattas rely heavily on volunteers and this year the volunteer crew from the Townsville Cruising Yacht Club again did an outstanding job.

Black Rose owner Rob Hart and his crew of international ‘Pirates’ have sailed in the second Sunferries Magnetic Island Race Week. Fully aware that this motor sailor had its limitations in a sailing fleet, the skipper and his crew entered the event ‘just to have fun.’

A new race record for the 22 nautical mile Magnetic Island Around the Island Race record today set by New Zealand’s Marley Wired. In the IRC Racing fleet, two Townsville boats are tussling for the overall crown. Wayne Millar’s Sydney 41 Zoe leads the series on count back from Leon Thomas’ 7 metre sports boat Guilty Pleasures.

A Race Directors role is easier if there is wind and by early afternoon across Cleveland Bay there should be white caps or ‘lambs in the paddock’ as New Zealand born Thompson calls them and the wind should be coming in from the east.

Second Time lucky for Townsville sailors
