Lexus Lincoln Regatta 2013 kicks off with a howling breeze

by Harry Fisher on 18 Feb 2013
The Sydney 38's on their start line - 2013 Lexus Lincoln Week Regatta Harry Fisher
The Lexus Lincoln Regatta 2013 has started off with a bang after a very strong breeze turned lethal on Boston Bay this afternoon.

There were plenty of boats that made it out for the first day of the Lincoln Regatta and dissimilarly to the conditions experienced in the Adelaide to Port Lincoln race the breeze had certainly arrived.

All divisions started their races in comfortable winds until the breeze built to a dangerous strength. Principal Race Officer Stuart Ross had no choice but to abandon all races after a lot of the boats were starting to have issues with the breeze.

With the breeze building to a maximum recorded strength of 35 knots a trimaran was overturned and many others experienced damages with gear on board.

Ross McOmish's trimaran Gneisenau of the Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club was overturned during the race and it took an excellent rescue mission from the official boats to bring the vessel back upright.

The boat experienced some severe damage but fortunately everyone on board was safe and after a long and strenuous towing exercise everyone made it back to the marina safely.

Tomorrows racing will be a long race from the Port Lincoln Marina around Taylors Island and hopefully we will be able to gain our first official results of the regatta whilst today's racing is likely to be re-sailed on Thursday.
