Isaac McHardie stacks up the awards in P class

The Stack 2012 P-Class Nationals on water action completed on Monday afternoon but not before a number of past winners dropped in to see what the current crop of P talent is made of. Roy Granic (1964 Tanner and Tauranga Cup), Brain Baker (1966 Tanner, 1967, Tauranga), Brian Jones (1975 Tauranga), all paid a visit as did Phil Davies, father of Len (1979 Tanner) and Ray (see below).

Unfortunately ill health prevented David Barnes (1973, Tanner and Tauranga) attending, whilst Sir Russell Coutts (1978 Tanner) proffered his apologies as overseas duties called. And of course Leslie Egnot (1979 Tauranga) was keeping a very close eye on proceedings as her two aspiring sailors participated on the water.

The regatta culminated on Monday evening with the prize giving. David Gunn of Stack Business Interiors got the important stuff underway as he handed out the spot prizes ably assisted by no less than Peter Montgomery. Event organiser John Jennings then called on former Club Commodore Dave Barnes (the not quite so famous one) to say a few words. Dave asked that Great Southern Man John Olds to step forward and then proceeded to enlightened everyone with a brief and amusing history of Oldsy’s association with Murrays Bay Sailing Club and how he has become a literal legend at all of the club’s major regattas.

Dave’s announcement that Oldsy was to be made a Life Member of Murrays Bay Sailing Club was met with universal delight and approval. For all those that know Oldsy and what he has done at countless regattas around the country and for his support, in particular, of the P-Class there was no doubting the merit of this recognition and this was a particularly fitting occasion on which to announce it. To quote many of the young sailors, 'Oldsy is cool!'

Immediately afterwards it was time to commence handing over the silverware but not before Peter Montgomery, the MC for the evening, said, '... what better place than Murrays Bay Sailing Club for such a prestigious selection of sailing trophies to be handed over. The walls of the sailing club positively drip with history and the names of luminaries that have graced the P-Class, subsequent classes, and then gone on to achieve great success at the very highest level'.

Ray Davies and Dean Barker of Emirates Team New Zealand, previous winners of both the Tanner and Tauranga Cups in 1987 and 1988 respectively, were on hand to help Peter hand over the silverware. They both reinforced not only the merits of sailing as a chosen sport but also how the P-Class set them off on their illustrious careers and how it still has a major role to play in the development of New Zealand’s finest young sailing talent.

For Isaac McHardie there is no doubt that the event lived up to the sponsors name as Isaac took away a literal Stack of awards. As well as taking out the two most prestigious trophies in New Zealand Centreboard Sailing, the Tanner and Tauranga Cups, Isaac also took home the John Thompson Trophy as winner of the first race of the Tanner Cup series, three Bullet Trophies for each of his race wins in the Tanner Cup and a further four bullet trophies for each of his race wins in the Tauranga Cup as well as helping his club, Hamilton Yacht Club, take home the Franklin Plumbing Trophy.
