Darren Martin and Simon Murray of Ireland won the Flying Fifteen pre-world event at the Royal Port de Pollença YC, Mallorca.

Martin and Murrey finished in 17th place in the final race but their only rivals for the title, Make Hart and Tim Hall (GBR) were unable to improve on their score line (finishing 12th) leaving Martin and Murrey able to discard the final race result.

The final race was held in an easterly of 10 to 12 knots. Obviously finding the fresher conditions more to their liking, Steve Goacher and Phil Evans got into single figures for the first time in this event with a race win.

Second were Dave McKee and Chris Hewkin (GBR) to move up to fourth overall and in third were Australians Grant Alderson and Dean McAullay, to recover from Wednesday’s woes and finish third overall.

Twenty of the competitors in the pre-worlds failed to move on to the World event, so seventy boats will sail for the World Championship.

Friday and Saturday are measurement days ahead of the start of the Flying 15 World Championship on Sunday. Following from the pre-world event, which had a wide spread of competitors in contention for the top ten, the championship looks to be very open.

Martin and Murrey (IRL) will be buoyed by their pre-event win and the top six positions were filled with familiar names who are sure to be in the running, plus the good performance of the local pair, Paco Ibáñez and Juan Merayo, bodes well for them.

Still to make their mark are teams such as Charles Apthorp and Dave Richards, who finished with an 11th in the final race, and Alan Bax and Paul Busby who had a couple of fourth places in the final races.
